The CPA Canada Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (ACAF)

The CPA Canada Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (ACAF) is a nationally recognized certificate for those seeking a challenging and rewarding career in accounting and finance.

Starting January 2018, ACAF applied courses are now offered online though post-secondary partners. You will continue to be able to ACAF entry and technical courses through CPA Atlantic as usual.


The CPA Canada Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (ACAF) provides the applied accounting and finance skills necessary to enhance a college graduates career prospects in accounting and finance without becoming a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA).

As a certificate holder, you will qualify for junior and intermediate-level accounting jobs in business, not-for-profit and government, as well as CPA-supervised positions in public accounting.

The ACAF enhances a college diploma with area specific coverage of accounting principles. The program structure consists of 16 online courses, Courses can be taken part-time or full-time according to your own schedule.

Starting January 2018, delivery of the ACAF applied courses has moved to post-secondary school partners. Please contact your Student Recruitment Advisor for an up to date list of partners offering these courses online. Equivalencies to the ACAF entry and technical courses are also offered at universities and colleges around the region, as well as through CPA preparatory courses offered by CPA Atlantic School of Business. Additional information on online delivery partners can be found online with CPA Canada, and will be updated as it becomes available.

Students should also be aware that CPA Canada requires an ACAF National Examination that is administered through CPA Atlantic. This National Examination is required of all students completing the ACAF applied courses after December 31, 2017.

Online registration for the ACAF National Exam is now available. The national exam is offered three (3) times annually, in both English and French, with the 2019 dates listed below:

  • May 24
  • September 6


Applied: It uses authentic business scenarios that requires you to demonstrate the application of technical knowledge.

Integrated: Ethics, communications and other soft skills valued by employers are integrated into technical and elective courses, and hands-on use of accounting and business software applications enhance workplace relevance.

Relevant: You can choose from a list of electives that will best position you for placement and advancement.

Online: All course content is offered exclusively online, and can be completed online, anytime, anywhere.

Attainable: The ACAF can be completed in one year of full-time study or part-time at your own pace.

Supported: You will have access to subject matter experts who will answer content related questions and provide coaching through the course requirements and applications.


  • Have a two-year accounting diploma, and/or
  • Would like to work in accounting, but not as a certified Chartered Professional Accountant, and/or
  • Have the prerequisite course coverage required for admission to ACAF:
    •     Introductory Financial Accounting
    •     Introductory Management Accounting
    •     Intermediate Financial Reporting I
    •     Intermediate Financial Reporting II
    •     Business Law


  •     Six technical courses (note: you can receive exemptions from these courses)
    •         Advanced Financial Reporting
    •         Corporate Finance
    •         Audit and Assurance
    •         Taxation
    •         Intermediate Management Accounting
    •         Information Technology
  •     Five applied courses (with the exception of the Accounting Software Applications, these courses are not eligible for exemptions)
    •         Ethics and Workplace Skills
    •         Two electives from the following:
        • Applied External Audit
        • Applied Personal and Corporate Taxation
        • Not-for-profit Accounting
        • Public Sector Financial Management Practice
    • Accounting Software Applications (SAGE accounting)
    • Business Applications
